31 Day Music Challenge: Day 30 Your Favorite Song This Time Last Year

Katy Perry

Wide Awake” by Katy Perry was my favorite song this time last year. I looked up what songs were popular in June 2012 and it jumped off the list.  Definitely loved this song and singing along with the lyrics.  It’s about being a self-sufficient woman facing reality instead of living in dream realms.  Letting go and waking up, being yourself no matter what people think or who is with you or not.

Killing in the Name Of” by Rage Against the Machine is a song I listen to when I’m angry. It’s got high energy and a driving beat. The lyrics are rebellious and angry. It’s not a song for the faint of heart. I’ve written another post about songs that express anger here in an entry called Bang Your Head. Sometimes it’s good to bang your head and let it all out!

31 Day Music Challenge: Day 18 A Song that You Wish You Heard on the Radio

“Heart Back” by Macy Maloy is a song that I wish I heard on the radio. She is a girl from the town where I live. She went to high school with my oldest daughter, and she has followed her passion playing and singing songs. I’m happy for her that she has an EP out now and think she has a beautiful voice.  Check out her YouTube channel and see if you like her work.

31 Day Music Challenge: Day 13 A Song that Is a Guilty Pleasure

Guilty pleasure. I wasn’t sure what that meant exactly. So I looked it up. It’s something you enjoy but feel guilty because you fear what others might think of it.

I’m going with “Baby” by Justin Bieber. Say what you will about the biebs, I enjoy listening to his songs. I sing along in most cases. I can play “One Time” and “Baby” on the guitar, but I haven’t made YouTube videos yet. I’m picking this song because I can see how in some people’s opinions, it’s his most cheesy, girl-sounding song. It’s the encore at his live concerts with explosions, light shows, confetti, and all. Not feeling too guilty though because I like it even if other people don’t.

I especially loved it when Drew appeared on the X Factor with a cover of Baby. She slowed it down and made it slightly different melodically.  At fourteen years old, that is way impressive!  Check it out and comment to tell me whose version you prefer:  Justin’s or Drew’s?

31 Day Music Challenge: Day 5 A Song that Reminds You of Someone

“Every long lost dream led me to where you are.

Others who broke my heart,

they are like northern stars

pointing me on my way

into your loving arms.

This much I know is true,

that god blessed the broken road

that led me straight to you.”

Bless the Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts reminds me of my husband.  Love these lyrics about the long and winding road of life and love.  Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing because everything I did led me exactly to where I am now.  Even at the time if I thought it was a tough experience or the end of a road or relationship, I didn’t know where I would be now. Sometimes it’s true that when one door closes another one opens.

We met in 1998 after both having failed first marriages. I had just moved to Reno, NV (long story). I was thirty years old, a new teacher with my master’s degree, a single mom with a five-year old daughter.  He was a  25-year-old college student (started college at 24 years old) working at the gym.  We were in different places in our lives, but we met at the gym, and we fell in love.  We got married a year later and had two children together.  He finished his education and became a lawyer.  I’m so thankful that our paths crossed and hopeful for our future together.

31 Days of Music: Day 1 Your Favorite Song

It’s a new month, and I feel like doing a new challenge. So, I’m going to post every day this month about music. Here is a link to the 30 day music challenge on my friend, Kelly’s, blog.

My favorite song is “Near You Always” by Jewel.

It’s sweet and simple. Her words braid together to tell a story of love and desire wrapped up in rejection.  It’s about loving someone you can’t be with.  It’s hard to pick one favorite song, but this is it if I have to pick one. I wish I wrote it. I can play it on the guitar.  Here is a video.

Playing Guitar

I took my first guitar lesson in eighth grade. That year, I learned how to play several popular songs like Stairway to Heaven, I Love Rock n Roll, Leroy Brown, and If. I played on and off through the years and got my first electric guitar at forty years of age. ln college, I took another beginner guitar class and recorded Driver 8 (REM) and Uncle John’s Band (Grateful Dead) as projects. Although I could play the chords pretty well, I’ve just been learning more about soloing and music theory over the past couple of years that I’ve been taking private lessons.

Once a week, my teacher comes over to my house to give me a lesson. He also gives lessons over Skype and has a website with an extensive library of video lessons. I’m learning some easier songs as well as some difficult theory and solos. We’ve been having fun using the app called JamUp to slow down the music and play along with it. I don’t practice every single day like I want to, but I do make some time to play during the weeks and at least the weekly lesson holds me accountable. This Friday, we will be recording me playing “You Shook Me All Night Long” by AC/DC. Here is his website for future reference:

For now, you can enjoy these songs I’ve previously recorded:

I’m not that confident with my soloing or improvising yet, but I’ve recorded a few songs on the acoustic guitar and posted them to my YouTube channel.
